Summer Braun is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alabama, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. She holds a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from The Pennsylvania State University and previously served as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development. Her research focuses on schools as contexts for children’s development, emphasizing teachers’ occupational health, students’ social-emotional development, and mindfulness-based interventions. Braun employs ecological systems models to study how teacher well-being intersects with student outcomes, particularly through evidence-based interventions like the PAX Good Behavior Game and mindfulness programs. Her work bridges research and practice, addressing classroom management, teacher-student interactions, and equity in school climates.
Research interests include the psychometric validation of assessment tools for school settings, the role of teacher social competencies in classroom dynamics, and the moderating effects of race and gender on educational outcomes. She has explored pandemic impacts on educators and students, intervention implementation challenges, and developmental differences in classroom management across school levels. Braun’s studies frequently involve randomized controlled trials and mixed-methods approaches to evaluate program efficacy.
Her academic contributions include over 20 peer-reviewed articles since 2017, with topics ranging from ADHD knowledge in pre-service teachers to neural correlates of social decision-making. Braun’s lab is based at the Child and Family Research Clinic, where she collaborates on projects linking theoretical frameworks to practical educational strategies.
