معرفی
Sumiko Tsukamoto is a Professor of Quaternary Geochronology at the University of Tübingen since 2023. Previously, she held positions including Senior Scientist at the Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics (since 2008), and Postdoctoral and Assistant roles at various institutions such as Aberystwyth University and Tokyo Metropolitan University. She is currently President of the International Luminescence and ESR Dating (LED) Society and holds editorial roles in journals like Geochronology and Radiation Measurements.
Her research focuses on method developments in luminescence and electron spin resonance dating, Quaternary landscape evolution influenced by tectonics and climate, and human-climate interactions. She leads or participates in major projects such as the DFG-funded Temari (tectonic controls on marine terraces) and LION-II (Indian monsoon studies), as well as the ERC-funded Paleonile project on Pleistocene faunal evolution in Sudan.
- Education: PhD in Physics from Osaka University (1992), followed by postdoctoral fellowships at institutions including the Geological Survey of Japan and Kwansei Gakuin University.
- Grants and Projects:
- Temari (DFG): Tectonic and wave controls on marine terraces (PIs: L. Malatesta, S. Tsukamoto)
- LION-II (DFG): Loess in India and monsoon system (PIs: C. Zeeden, J. Meister, S. Tsukamoto)
- Paleonile (ERC): Nile evolution and faunal studies (Partner: S. Tsukamoto)
- CCEHN (MWK/Volkswagenstiftung): Climate change and early humans (PI: S. Tsukamoto)
- HOPE (DFG): Fault structure and dating (PIs: C. Brandes, J. Igel, etc.)
- Editorial and Leadership Roles: President of LED Society (since 2023), Editorial Board Member of Radiation Measurements, Associate Editor of Geochronology (2019–2023), and various advisory roles in international conferences and societies.
Her teaching includes MSc courses on Quaternary sediment dating techniques and BSc modules on Quaternary Geology, emphasizing climate cycles, sedimentary records, and landscape evolution through lectures, field excursions, and practical exercises.
