Sujata S. Mody is an Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at North Carolina State University, specializing in Modern Hindi literature and South Asian cultural studies. She teaches Hindi/Urdu language and literature, and serves as Section Coordinator for Hindi-Urdu Studies, Major Adviser for the Asian Language Concentration (Hindi-Urdu track), and Hindi-Urdu Minor Adviser.
Dr. Mody earned her B.A. in English and Anthropology from Rice University, followed by M.A. and Ph.D. in South and Southeast Asian Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on colonial literary modernity, examining how Hindi literary journals like Sarasvati shaped nationalist discourse and literary canons in early 20th century India. She explores intersections of visual culture, gender, and nationalism in her work.
Her scholarship includes monographs and articles analyzing Hindi literary historiography, editorial practices, and the role of visual art in literary movements. She has presented widely at academic conferences across the U.S. and South Asia, addressing topics from gender politics in short stories to pedagogical innovations in language teaching.
Mody actively engages in language education initiatives, co-organizing workshops on technology integration in language instruction and serving on panels for the UNC Language Assembly. Her research and teaching reflect a commitment to interdisciplinary approaches to South Asian literatures and cultures.
