Sugata Ray is an Associate Professor in the History of Art Department at the University of California, Berkeley. His research bridges South and Southeast Asian art and architecture with global early modern artistic cultures, focusing on intersections of ecology, materiality, and colonialism. He is affiliated with the Department of South & Southeast Asian Studies.
- Research Areas: Eco art history, Indian Ocean trade, postcolonial theory, geoaesthetics, water histories.

Ray’s publications include essays in Art History and The Art Bulletin, and co-edited volumes on ecologies, aesthetics, and water histories of South Asia. His doctoral students explore topics such as Rajput painting, early modern Southeast Asia-Americas exchanges, and Indian Ocean maritime networks.
