Sue Vaughan is Professor of Cell and Molecular Biology at Oxford Brookes University, affiliated with the School of Biological and Medical Sciences. She is the Director of the Oxford Brookes Centre for Bioimaging and leads an active research group focused on the cell biology of parasitic protozoa such as Trypanosoma, Leishmania, and Plasmodium.
Her research interests lie at the intersection of cell and molecular biology, parasitology, and advanced bioimaging. She investigates the structure and function of flagella and cilia, organelle dynamics, cell division, and morphogenesis in trypanosomes. Her lab employs cutting-edge 3D microscopy techniques including serial block face SEM, electron tomography, and array tomography.
The recent publications from her group reveal a strong focus on genome-wide protein localization, flagellar assembly, basal body structure, and mitotic mechanisms in parasites. These studies often involve interdisciplinary collaborations and large-scale projects like the TrypTag initiative.
- Academy of Medical Sciences networking grant (2019-2020)
- Wellcome Trust Collaborative Grant (2016-2021): TrypTag
- MRC Research Grant (2015-2019)
- BBSRC responsive mode and Alert 13 grants
- BBSRC New Investigator award (2011-2014)
She supervises PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, and collaborates widely with parasitologists across the UK and internationally. Her leadership of the Centre for Bioimaging underscores her role in developing and applying advanced imaging technologies. She teaches in the Biomedical Science program, leading modules in Haematology & Immunology and lecturing in parasitology.
