Sue Clarke is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Illustration at Falmouth University, where she has taught for 17 years. She leads modules at Levels 4 and 6 of the BA(Hons) Illustration program and serves as an External Assessor for Derby University's Illustration course. Her academic roles include former positions as Joint Course Leader at Kingston University and Visiting Lecturer at institutions like Central Saint Martins.
Clarke holds a first-class BA(Hons) in Graphic Communication from Central Saint Martins (1989) and an Art Foundation from Oxford Polytechnic (1986). Her research focuses on visual problem-solving strategies in illustration, paper-engineered books with visual illusions (inspired by Chinese 'Jacob’s Ladder' mechanisms), and editorial illustration. She co-produced the BA Illustration Alumni Magazine 'Wunderkammer', addressing contemporary illustration themes like societal impact and diversity.
Her 2019 chapter in 'A Companion to Illustration' (Wiley Blackwell) explores conceptual frameworks for illustrators. Notable awards include a U.S. children’s book accolade and the Thames Television Travel Bursary. Clarke’s professional practice spans over 30 years, with clients like The Wall Street Journal, Penguin Books, and Amnesty International. She also exhibits internationally and collaborates with agencies like 'Painted Words'.
