Sudipta Das Bhowmik

Dr Sudipta Das Bhowmik is a Research Fellow at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), affiliated with the School of Biology & Environmental Science within the Faculty of Science. He holds a PhD in Plant Biotechnology from North Eastern Hill University, India (2009) and has over 11 years of research experience in genetic modification of legumes and conservation of endangered species. His work focuses on developing climate-smart crop varieties, such as drought and salinity-tolerant chickpea, and enhancing stress tolerance through biotechnological interventions. He is a recipient of the Advance Queensland Research Fellowship (2017) and collaborates with institutions like CSIRO Australia, the John Innes Centre (UK), and Elo Life Systems Australia.

Dr Bhowmik’s teaching roles include delivering third-year Plant Biology lectures at QUT and guest lectures to undergraduates. He has supervised multiple PhD and Master’s students, contributing to projects on autophagy in legumes, Australian wild rice salinity tolerance, and chickpea biofortification. His research grants include a $900,000 project on climate-smart chickpea varieties (2020–2023) and a $750,000 Advance Queensland Fellowship (2017–2021).

Professional affiliations include the Australian Society of Plant Scientists (ASPS), where he served on the organizing committee for the 2021 conference. His expertise spans plant genetic transformation, genome editing, and cryopreservation, with applications in crop improvement and environmental resilience.
