Subramaniam Pennathur is the Norman Radin Professor of Nephrology, Professor of Internal Medicine, and Section Head of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He leads research in lipid metabolism, diabetic kidney disease, and nanofluidic technologies. Affiliated with the Caswell Diabetes Institute, MM-PKUHSC Joint Institute, and Center for Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics.
Research focuses on mechanisms linking lipid dysregulation to kidney and vascular complications in diabetes. Recent work includes metabotype analysis for cardiorenal risk prediction, nanofluidic biosensors for DNA analysis, and multi-omics integration in kidney disease. Over 20 peer-reviewed publications since 2023 highlight contributions to diabetic nephropathy, environmental toxin effects, and precision medicine approaches.
Active in translational research, his lab develops diagnostic tools like optical glucose sensors and investigates therapeutic targets such as β-hydroxybutyrate for metabolic reprogramming. Collaborates across disciplines including biomedical engineering, epidemiology, and computational biology.
