Subhes C Bhattacharyya

Professor Subhes C Bhattacharyya is a Professor of Sustainable Energy Systems and Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures at De Montfort University (DMU), UK. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Media and the School of Engineering and Sustainable Development. He also leads the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD) and serves as the REF Coordinator for Architecture and the Built Environment (UoA 13) for REF2029.

His academic background includes a PhD and Advanced Masters in Applied Economics (Energy Economics) from Grenoble, France, a Master of Engineering in Energy Planning from the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from India.

Professor Bhattacharyya's research focuses on sustainable energy systems, energy economics, energy access, and regulatory frameworks, especially in developing countries. His work bridges engineering, economics, and policy analysis, with strong emphasis on rural electrification, mini-grids, decarbonisation, and energy governance. He has led extensive research in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to policy and practice.

His recent publications reveal a strong trend in energy access, mini-grid sustainability, regulatory impacts, and decarbonisation pathways, particularly in India and Africa. The interdisciplinary nature of his work spans energy policy, geospatial planning, human geography, and sustainable urban systems.

He has secured significant research funding from UKRI-GCRF, British Academy, ESRC, EPSRC, DFID, US Department of State, and the World Bank. He supervises PhD students and serves as an external examiner for MSc programs at Imperial College, University of Aberdeen, and Nottingham Trent University. He also provides consultancy to organizations like PwC, NERA, and the World Bank.

He leads the Institute for Sustainable Futures and is deeply involved in research groups such as the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD). His team works on projects like SIGMA and Decarb-IT, focusing on inclusive mini-grids and equitable decarbonisation.
