Professor Sube Banerjee is an Honorary Visiting Professor at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), a partnership between the Universities of Brighton and Sussex. He holds the position of Professor of Dementia and serves as the Associate Dean at BSMS. Clinically, he works as a Consultant Psychiatrist with the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. His academic roles and clinical expertise are focused on dementia, mental health in older adults, and health policy.
Sube Banerjee has an impressive academic background, including qualifications such as MB BS, MSc, MBA, MD, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych). His training includes stints at St Thomas’, Guy’s, and the Maudsley Hospitals.
His research primarily revolves around dementia, focusing on quality of life assessments, service evaluation, and the development of cost-effective interventions. Key areas include the evaluation of new treatments, applied health research, and the interface between policy, research, and clinical practice. He has pioneered the DEMQOL system to measure quality of life in dementia patients and has contributed significantly to reducing the use of anti-psychotic drugs in dementia care, which has saved lives and improved patient outcomes globally.
Professor Banerjee has been recognized nationally and internationally for his contributions, including being awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to dementia care and research.
He has advised the UK Department of Health and led the development of the National Dementia Strategy. His work emphasizes translating research into policy, particularly through collaborations with governments and industry to improve health systems for older adults. He directs the Centre for Dementia Studies at BSMS, a hub for interdisciplinary research on dementia care and policy.
