Su-Kyoung Hwang is a Senior Lecturer in Korean Studies at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD from the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on the Korean War, Cold War dynamics, environmental history, gender studies, and rural life in South Korea. She currently leads projects on air warfare in Korea and gendered narratives of pastoral life.
Her editorial roles include Regional Editor for Asian Studies Review (2024–present) and Book Review Editor for the same journal (2022–23). She has published extensively, including her seminal book Korea’s Grievous War (2016) and peer-reviewed articles in Critical Asian Studies, The Asia-Pacific Journal, and Journal of Military History.
Research interests span modern warfare’s impact on civilians, environmental trauma, and cultural analysis of counterurbanization. She frequently engages with media, contributing to ABC News, Bloomberg, and podcasts on South Korean politics and culture. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary societal issues, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to Korean Studies.
