Merose Hwang is an Associate Professor and Interim Chair of the History Department at Hiram College, USA. They also serve as Program Coordinator for Asian Studies Minor, Peace Corps Prep Program, and Advisor for the Eclectic Scholars Honors Program. Hwang holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (Canada), an M.A. from Yonsei University (South Korea), and a B.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder (USA).
Research focuses on Modern East Asian social, cultural, and gender history with special attention to Cold War genocides and spiritual community restoration. Notable works analyze Korean historical events like the Cheju April 3 Incident and explore themes such as shamanism's role in post-trauma resilience. Their interdisciplinary approach bridges history, cultural studies, and human rights frameworks.
Publications include A New Outlook at Atrocities (2023) and Peace as Liberation (2023). They have been interviewed for the Korea and the World podcast and contributed to Asian Journal of Women’s Studies. Awards include multiple NEH and Korea Foundation grants.
Hwang has held research fellowships at Yonsei University's Institute for Korean Studies and Sogang University's Institute for the Study of Religion. Their advising includes mentoring honors program students while maintaining active participation in academic conferences and public history initiatives.
