معرفی
Stéphane Symons is a full professor at the Institute of Philosophy, KU Leuven, where he directs the Centre for Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion and Philosophy of Culture. His academic work bridges continental philosophy, art theory, and cultural studies, with significant institutional roles including chairing the Contemporary Art Committee and serving on the Executive Committee of the Leuven Language Institute.
His research focuses on philosophy of art, aesthetics, and 20th century German thought, particularly Walter Benjamin's theories of drawing and perception. Key interests include phenomenology, embodiment in artistic practices, and the intersection of politics and aesthetics. Recent projects explore drawing beyond visual perception, unworldliness in German philosophy, and the societal role of art through multi-part analyses like the 'Kan kunst de wereld redden?' series.
Symons leads major funded research including the Disegni network (2024-2028) on drawing theory and 'Drawing the Invisible' (2023-2027) analyzing serial drawing practices. His publications reveal consistent engagement with Benjamin, embodiment, and art's capacity for social transformation, often connecting historical philosophical frameworks to contemporary artistic phenomena.
Administratively, he holds influential positions across KU Leuven's cultural and educational infrastructure, including membership on the Institute of Philosophy's Executive Committee, Education Council, and the POC Archaeology/Art Sciences committee. His teaching portfolio spans continental philosophy, aesthetics, and philosophy of contemporary culture courses.
