Stéphane Guay is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Addictionology at the Faculty of Medicine, Université de Montréal, with a secondary appointment at the School of Criminology within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He serves as Scientific Director of the Research Center of the Montreal University Institute of Mental Health (CR-IUSMM) where he leads the Trauma Study Center.
Dr. Guay holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology and specializes in the care of victims of serious violence, particularly in workplace settings, and individuals who have developed post-traumatic stress disorder following various traumatic events. His research aims to improve psychosocial interventions for people at risk of developing post-traumatic reactions while accounting for the differential needs of women and men.
His primary research focuses on three interconnected areas: workplace violence victims and their care from psychological, social, and organizational perspectives; evaluation, prevention, and treatment of post-traumatic consequences among victims of violent acts; and study of help-seeking strategies, effects of social network reactions on victims' mental health, and development of instruments measuring support processes. His work bridges clinical psychology, criminology, and occupational health with practical applications for mental health interventions.
Dr. Guay's publication record demonstrates strong expertise in PTSD, workplace violence, and trauma psychology with particular attention to gender differences in trauma response and recovery. His research shows consistent focus on developing evidence-based interventions and understanding social support mechanisms in trauma recovery.
Dr. Guay has secured substantial research funding from major Canadian funding agencies including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and Quebec Research Funds (FRQS, FRQSC), supporting numerous projects from 2008 through 2031.
