Stéphane Gaubert

Stéphane Gaubert is a Senior Research Scientist at INRIA Saclay and a part-time Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at École Polytechnique. He heads the Tropical research team, a joint initiative between INRIA and the Centre de Mathématiques Appliquées (CMAP), and co-directs the Master 2 (Research) in Optimization program at University Paris Saclay and Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

His research spans tropical algebra (max-plus algebra), optimization, operations research, and game theory, with applications in discrete event systems, control theory, and Hamilton-Jacobi equations. He develops computational methods like max-plus finite element techniques for deterministic optimal control problems.

He has supervised over 30 PhD students across institutions including École Polytechnique, École des Mines, and Université Paris-Saclay. Several advisees received distinctions, such as Pascal Benchimol (Ecole Polytechnique PhD Prize) and Paulin Jacquot (Paul Caseau/AMIES prizes).

He coordinates the Gaspard Monge Programme for Optimization and leads the ANR project XHilbertField, following prior projects Democrite and MALTHY.
