Stuart Lingo is a Professor of Art History and Associate Director of the School of Art + Art History + Design at the University of Washington. He holds the Donald E. Petersen Endowed Professorship. His research focuses on Italian art from c. 1300–1600, with a particular emphasis on the late Renaissance (1520–1600), exploring themes such as religious identity, artistic style, and Mannerism. His work includes the book Federico Barocci. Allure and Devotion in late Renaissance painting (2008) and articles on Bronzino, Barocci, and Counter-Reformation art.
Education: PhD in Art History from Harvard University (1998) and MA from the Courtauld Institute, University of London (1986). He teaches courses on Italian art and leads the Art and Art History Seminar in Rome. His current projects include Bronzino’s Bodies and Mannerism's Masks and Painting's Dreams at the End of the World, examining Mannerist art, religious imagery, and cultural shifts in early modern Europe.
Research interests include the altarpiece, mythological painting, the power of images, and the relationship between art and music. His work has been supported by institutions like the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts and the Kress Foundation.
