Professor Stuart Lane is a Professor of Medical Education and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Sydney's Sydney Medical School, and a Senior Staff Specialist in Intensive Care Medicine at Nepean Hospital. He leads the MD program at Sydney Medical School and has a dual focus on medical education innovation and critical care research. His research explores phenomenological analysis of human experience in clinical and educational settings, including patient outcomes post-ICU and reflective practice in healthcare training.
Education: MBBS from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (UK), PhD in healthcare education, and advanced qualifications in medical leadership. Notable achievements include national and international awards for teaching excellence, including the 2016 Australian Government Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning.
Research interests span qualitative methodologies, professionalism in medicine, and ICU patient follow-up. His work on open disclosure after medical errors and programmatic assessment systems in medical education has influenced curricula globally. He co-founded Nepean ICU's first post-discharge clinic to study chronic critical illness (CCI) impacts.
International collaborations include roles on the Academic Advisory Board of Canada's International Institute for Qualitative Methodologies and the Asia-Pacific Bioethics Network. Over 100 peer-reviewed publications span medical education, critical care, and interprofessional learning.
