Clinical Professor Anthony McLean is affiliated with the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at the Nepean Clinical School, University of Sydney, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. His research focuses on critical care echocardiography, sepsis, cardiovascular diseases, infection and immunity, and translational research. He has contributed to international guidelines for managing sepsis and septic shock, and has been involved in developing training standards for critical care ultrasound competency.
Key research areas include biomarker identification for respiratory infections (e.g., IFI27), hemodynamic monitoring in critically ill patients, and the role of genetics and genomic signatures in sepsis and influenza pathogenesis. McLean has authored/co-authored major textbooks such as the 2020 Oxford Textbook of Advanced Critical Care Echocardiography and the 2012 Critical Care Ultrasound Manual, and has led studies on fluid therapy optimization, beta-blocker effects in sepsis, and post-partum catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome.
- Hosted the ECHO-COVID multinational study analyzing echocardiography findings in ICU patients
- Co-developed the PRICES statement guiding critical care echocardiography research reporting
- Contributed to Surviving Sepsis Campaign international guidelines (2016)
- Explored molecular mechanisms linking metabolic pathways to critical illness outcomes
His work emphasizes bridging clinical practice and research through translational approaches, with a focus on improving diagnostic accuracy and patient management in intensive care settings. He has collaborated extensively with organizations like the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) to establish training frameworks and competency standards.
