Professor Anthony Gordon holds the Chair in Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Imperial College London's Department of Surgery & Cancer, Faculty of Medicine, where he serves as Head of the Division of Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine & Intensive Care. He is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at St Mary's Hospital, leading translational research focused on sepsis and personalised medicine through multi-omic techniques and artificial intelligence.
His medical training was completed in London with supplementary clinical experience at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital and Vancouver's St Paul's Hospital, University of British Columbia. Prof Gordon's research centers on developing precision medicine approaches for sepsis through major international clinical trials including REMAP-CAP (evaluating IL-6 receptor antagonists and corticosteroids for severe infections), VANISH, LeoPARDS, and SepTiC. His work integrates artificial intelligence with -omic data to individualise critical care interventions for acutely ill patients.
Scientific Awards

Prof Gordon has secured substantial NIHR funding including a Clinician Scientist Fellowship and Research Professorship. He currently directs the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme (since June 2025) and chairs the Imperial Clinical Trials Unit's Scientific Advisory Board for the 'Emergency and Critical Care' therapeutic group. His leadership extends to previous roles as Intensive Care Society Research Director (2014-2023) and NIHR Critical Care Specialty Group Experimental Medicine Chair (2016-2022).
His research team operates within Imperial's Centre for Antimicrobial Optimisation and Artificial Intelligence Network, developing AI-driven personalised treatment protocols using multi-omic data from ICU patients. The group maintains strong industry partnerships through the NIHR Critical Care Specialty Group and focuses on translating trial findings into clinical practice for sepsis management.
