Stuart Hodgetts is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Human Sciences, The University of Western Australia (UWA), and Director of the Spinal Cord Repair Laboratory. He holds a concurrent Senior Research Fellow appointment at the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science. His expertise spans stem cell-based therapies, gene therapy, and regenerative medicine for spinal cord injury (SCI) repair.
Education: BSc and PhD from the University of Essex.
Research Interests: Focuses on spinal cord repair using clinical-grade mesenchymal stem cells, gene therapy (AAV vectors), in vivo reprogramming, and non-invasive therapies like photobiomodulation. His work integrates tissue engineering, neuroprotection, and immunomodulation strategies. Recent projects include combining stem cells with red/near-infrared light therapy and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.
Grants & Funding: CI on $5.2M in grants (NHMRC, ARC, Perron Institute). Current projects involve self-assembling peptide hydrogels, cerebral organoid studies, and LED-based phototherapy for SCI.
Labs & Collaborations: Directs the Spinal Cord Repair Lab and collaborates with engineers and neuroscientists. Engaged with SymbioticA for art-science research.
