Stuart Davis is a Senior Lecturer Emeritus in the Department of Literatures in English at Cornell University. He joined the faculty in 1984 and has taught at Yale, CUNY, and Orange County Community College. His academic roles include mentoring graduate student instructors and leading courses on Shakespeare, apocalyptic fictions, crime narratives, and expository writing. Davis is a recipient of the Weiss Provost’s Teaching Fellow Emeritus award, recognizing his contributions to pedagogy. His research focuses on early modern drama, narrative theory, and the intersection of literature with philosophy and technology.
He has designed innovative courses such as English 1147: The Mystery in the Story and English 3810: Uncanny Reading, Canny Critical Writing, emphasizing collaborative learning and critical analysis. His work has been published in venues like English at Cornell and Arts and Sciences Newsletter, exploring topics ranging from missile defense discourse to the pedagogical role of lecturers in liberal arts education.
Throughout his career, Davis has advised minors in English and served as faculty advisor to Melodramatics Theatre Company. His teaching philosophy integrates technology and traditional literary analysis, as seen in courses like English 2890.5: Making the News, which examines media narratives through a literary lens.
