Stine Malin Brynildsen

Stine Malin Brynildsen is an Associate Professor at Østfold University College, working in the Department of Education, ICT and Learning within the Faculty of Teacher Education and Languages. As of September 2024, she works 50% as a senior lecturer and 50% as a PhD candidate, focusing her doctoral research on writing in the age of chatbots. She serves as the academic environment coordinator for the ICT and learning professional environment and is a member of the Research in Digital Education (RIDE) group.

Her educational background includes a Master's degree in Nordic Literature from the University of Oslo (2004-2006) and 11 years of experience as a Norwegian and English teacher in upper secondary schools. She has developed significant expertise in professional digital competence for teachers (PfDK), artificial intelligence in education, and MOOC development.

Brynildsen's research focuses primarily on the intersection of artificial intelligence, particularly chatbots, with educational writing processes and assessment practices. She leads the ongoing research project 'Writing in the age of chatbots,' which follows students and teachers in Norwegian subject classrooms at upper secondary schools to explore interactions with and use of generative AI in academic writing. Her work also examines professional digital competence development within teacher communities and blended learning approaches in vocational education.

Her publications reveal a strong focus on AI in education, with numerous 2024 articles addressing chatbots in assessment, writing processes, and professional development frameworks. The research shows a clear trend toward practical applications of AI in classrooms, with emphasis on balancing opportunities and challenges, developing specific frameworks for implementation, and understanding teacher and student experiences with the technology.

She actively develops and teaches several MOOCs, including Professional Digital Competence (PfDKMOOC) and Pedagogical Use of ICT (IKTPEDMOOC), and is developing a new course on AI in schools for the 2024/2025 academic year. She also runs the Digital Learning Workshop (DLV) and works with school-based competence development through DEKOMP.

Brynildsen co-hosts two educational podcasts: 'Norskpraten' with colleague Maja Michelsen, focusing on Norwegian language teaching, and 'Skolelys' with Cecilie Olanderson, addressing broader educational topics. She was project manager for the EEA project BlendVET (2021-2024), which aimed to define blended learning in vocational contexts and increase vocational teachers' digital pedagogical competence.
