Stiliana Milkova is an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Italian at Oberlin College, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds an AB from Brown University and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on contemporary Italian literature, literary translation, and intersections between literature and visual arts/architecture. She authored Elena Ferrante as World Literature (2021) and co-edited special issues on Ferrante and Natalia Ginzburg. Her creative work includes the short story collection Storia delle prime volte (2022), praised for its stylistic resemblance to Italo Calvino.
Milkova teaches courses on comparative literature, literary translation, and Italian women’s writing. She curates exhibitions at Oberlin’s Allen Memorial Art Museum, including Women Bound and Unbound (2019). As editor of Reading in Translation, she publishes essays on translation theory and global literature. Recent scholarly contributions include Natalia Ginzburg’s Global Legacies (2024), analyzing Ginzburg’s transnational resonance.
Her work bridges academic and creative realms, emphasizing female authorship, trauma studies, and cross-cultural narratives. She has presented at international conferences, including the Venice Film Festival (2021) and the American Association of Italian Studies (2024). Her research explores themes of language trauma, self-translation, and urban topographies in contemporary Italian fiction.
