Stijn van Deursen is an Assistant Professor and Postdoc at the Molengraaff Institute for Private Law within the Utrecht University School of Law. He specializes in empirical legal studies, focusing on judicial decision-making processes, particularly how judges manage societal, political, and legal complexities in public interest litigation. His research employs multidisciplinary methods, drawing insights from beyond traditional legal frameworks.
Education: He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Cum Laude) and a Master of Legal Research (LLM Cum Laude) from Utrecht University. His PhD research (completed in 2025) explored the role of societal impact in judicial decisions.
Research: Key projects include an NWO-funded study on judicial legitimacy in public interest cases (collaborating with Tilburg University) and analyses of algorithmic decision-making in public sectors and the Belt & Road Initiative's academic impacts.
Teaching: He instructs bachelor’s and master’s courses in private and public law. He is part of the Behaviour & Institutions research platform under the Institutions for Open Societies theme and leads the ELS Lab. He also advises the Dutch Council for the Judiciary on judicial decision-making.
Contributions: His work bridges legal theory with empirical research, addressing contemporary challenges like algorithmic governance and historical injustice redressal. He has published extensively on judicial legitimacy, societal impact in law, and interdisciplinary legal methodologies.
