Emmanuel Stiakakis serves as Professor and Dean at the School of Mineral Resources Engineering, Technical University of Crete, within the Mining Technology Department. He directs the Applied Geology Laboratory and maintains active academic engagement through teaching and research.
His research spans three core domains:
- Geotechnical Engineering: Mechanical behavior of soils/soft rocks, slope stability analysis, and geohazard mitigation
- Hydrogeology: Karst aquifer dynamics, groundwater flow simulation, and aquifer vulnerability assessment
- Mining Engineering: Surface mining restoration and lignite mine geotechnics
Publication analysis (2009-2023) reveals evolving expertise from lignite mining geomechanics to contemporary karst hydrology, with recent emphasis on drought impacts, groundwater vulnerability mapping, and protection zones in Cretan aquifers using integrated field and modeling approaches.
Key research initiatives include:
- Messara basin flow/salinization modeling (GEOSYNOLO Consulting)
- Achlada lignite mine slope stability (Achlada Lignite Mines SA)
- RAFF project: Pit flooding risk assessment (EU RFCS)
- Coastal aquifer protection (BLACK SEA ERA.NET)
- Sustainable aggregates planning (SNAP/SARMA - EU)
The Applied Geology Laboratory under his leadership drives industry-relevant research in mining geotechnics and karst hydrology, with strong ties to Greek mining operations and European environmental consortia.
