Professor Steven Young is a faculty member at Lancaster University's Management School, Department of Accounting and Finance. He holds a PhD from Lancaster University and a B.A.(Hons) in Accounting and Finance from the University of Wales Bangor. His research focuses on financial reporting, corporate disclosures, and text mining applications in finance. Key areas include narrative analysis of annual reports, computational linguistics in financial discourse, and the impact of regulatory frameworks on corporate communication. He has published extensively in top journals like the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting and serves as an Associate Editor for multiple journals. His work has been featured in media outlets such as the Financial Times, BBC, and Reuters.
Professor Young has led numerous research projects, including initiatives funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and Financial Reporting Council (FRC). He currently supervises PhD students and has mentored over 14 completions. His leadership roles include serving as Head of the Accounting and Finance Department (2013–2018) and Deputy Head (2012–2013 and 2018–present). He is also a member of the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business and the UCREL corpus research group.
His recent projects include analyzing modern slavery reporting practices, developing tools for automated financial text analysis, and exploring the implications of AI in corporate reporting quality assessment. He collaborates with organizations like the ICAEW and CFA Society UK, contributing to policy discussions and practitioner education.
