Steven Yao is the Edmund A. LeFevre Professor of English at Hamilton College, with affiliations in Literature and Creative Writing and Asian Studies. His research spans global modernisms, Asian-American literature, translation theory, and jazz studies, focusing on cross-cultural poetics and diasporic narratives.

Yao’s work interrogates intersections of language, identity, and modernity across transnational contexts, with recent publications analyzing Pacific Rim modernisms and Chinese diasporic verse. His scholarship bridges literary theory, cultural history, and translation studies.
He co-edited seminal volumes including Sinographies: Writing China (2008) and Ezra Pound and Education (2012), and has received prestigious fellowships from the ACLS and ACE programs. Notably, his book Foreign Accents (2010) won the Association for Asian American Studies Book Award in Literary Studies.
