Steven Wernke is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at Vanderbilt University, where he also directs the Vanderbilt Institute for Spatial Research and the Spatial Analysis Research Laboratory. His interdisciplinary work bridges archaeology and historical anthropology, focusing on Andean indigenous experiences during periods of imperial transformation.
His research interests center on the impacts of serial imperial occupations—first by the Inka and then by the Spanish—on indigenous communities in South America. He combines archaeological and ethnohistorical data within spatial frameworks to explore lived experiences of colonialism, particularly through the lens of the Reducción General de Indios, a massive 16th-century forced resettlement program. His fieldwork is primarily based in the Colca Valley of southern Peru, conducted through long-term, community-engaged projects.
Wernke leads innovative large-scale digital initiatives, including the development of the Linked Open Gazetteer for the Andean Region (LOGAR) and the Geospatial Platform for Andean Culture, History, and Archaeology (GeoPACHA), which integrate GIS, satellite imagery, and AI models for continental-scale archaeological analysis. These tools enable virtual surveys and collaborative data collation across vast regions.
His scientific recognition includes several competitive fellowships and awards:
- Joe B. Wyatt Distinguished University Professor (2019–2020)
- Chancellor Faculty Fellow (2016–2018)
- Faculty Fellow, Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities (2020–2021)
Wernke has secured funding from prominent institutions such as the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, American Council of Learned Societies, Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies, and multiple Vanderbilt research centers. He leads collaborative international teams, including partnerships with Akira Saito (National Museum of Ethnology, Japan) and Parker VanValkenburgh (Brown University), advancing digital and spatial methodologies in archaeology.
He oversees two key research units: the Spatial Analysis Research Laboratory and the Vanderbilt Institute for Spatial Research, which provide critical infrastructural support for digital and spatial research across disciplines.
