Steven Theroux is a Professor of Biology at Assumption College, affiliated with the D’Amour College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (1989) and a B.A. in Biology/Chemistry from Rhode Island College (1984). His research focuses on molecular biology, cell signaling pathways, cancer biology, neurobiology, and evolutionary processes. Key areas include EGF receptor signaling, Raf kinase inhibitory protein functions, ZPR1-SMN protein interactions in spinal muscular atrophy, and the evolution of the universe and life.
Theroux has taught undergraduate courses such as Concepts of Biology, Cancer Biology, Genetics, and Molecular and Cellular Biology. His work has been supported by grants like the NIH Academic Research Enhancement Grant. He has published widely in journals like Nature Cell Biology, Brain Research Bulletin, and Molecular Biology of the Cell, and authored the book A Most Improbable Story (2022).
His awards include a Carnegie Foundation Professor of the Year nomination (2011), the Assumption College President’s Award for Excellence in Service (2013), and recognition for mentoring undergraduate researchers. His research spans molecular mechanisms in disease, protein interactions, and evolutionary biology, with contributions to understanding fundamental biological processes across multiple levels of complexity.
