Steven Spear

Steven Spear is a Senior Lecturer at MIT's Sloan School of Management, specializing in Management Science with a focus on System Dynamics. He also serves as a senior fellow at the Institute of Healthcare Improvement and Associated Faculty at Adriane Labs of the Harvard School of Public Health.

His research interests span organizational design, management systems, innovation, lean methodology, healthcare improvement, and high-velocity organizations. Spear's work focuses on understanding how organizations can accelerate learning, problem-solving, and innovation through effective sociotechnical systems design.

His publications show a consistent focus on practical applications of management theory across multiple sectors including healthcare, defense, and manufacturing. His recent work emphasizes wiring organizations for high-velocity problem-solving and competitive innovation.

Spear has advised numerous government officials including a Secretary of the Treasury, Undersecretary for Health Affairs at the Veterans Administration, the Chief of Naval Operations, and several corporate leaders. His research has been implemented in major organizational systems at Alcoa, DTE, Pittsburgh Region's Perfecting Patient Care System, and companies including Intel, Pratt and Whitney, Intuit, Novelis, and GSK.
