Steven Sibener is the Carl William Eisendrath Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Chicago, with additional appointments at the James Franck Institute and the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering. His research spans chemical physics, surface science, materials chemistry, and nanoscience, with a particular focus on understanding interfacial phenomena at the molecular level.
His research interests include surface reaction dynamics, gas-surface interactions, polymer dynamics, ice chemistry in terrestrial and astrophysical environments, superconducting radio frequency materials, and water sustainability. He has pioneered innovative experimental approaches combining sophisticated gas-surface scattering instruments with atomic-resolution scanning probe microscopes to investigate fundamental interfacial phenomena.
Professor Sibener's work bridges fundamental discovery with practical applications in energy systems, water purification, national security, and advanced accelerator technology. His laboratory has developed novel techniques such as isotope separation methods using gas-surface atomic diffraction and advanced characterization of superconducting materials for next-generation particle accelerators.
His scientific contributions have been recognized with numerous awards including election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2024), the ACS Remsen Award (2023), and Fellowships from both the American Chemical Society and the American Vacuum Society. His research group has produced numerous award-winning students who have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry.
