Steven J. Sibener is the Carl William Eisendrath Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago, affiliated with the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering. His research focuses on interfacial phenomena in chemical physics, materials science, and nanotechnology, with a particular emphasis on surface dynamics, superconductivity, and astrochemistry. He holds degrees from the University of Rochester and University of California, Berkeley.
- Education: ScB in Chemistry (Rochester, 198?), PhD in Chemistry (UC Berkeley, 198?).
- Leadership: Founded the Center for Materials Chemistry in the Space Environment and Center for Energetic Non-Equilibrium Chemistry at Interfaces; chaired committees establishing the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering.
Key research interests include molecular beam scattering, scanning probe microscopy, and numerical simulations. His group has pioneered studies on ice chemistry, superconducting RF materials, and directed self-assembly of nanomaterials. Major awards include the ACS Remsen Award, Marlow Medal, and five fellowships from prestigious scientific societies.
Grants and collaborations span NSF, DOD, and NIST projects. His lab facilities include advanced AFM, STM, and molecular beam systems. Current projects address energy-water systems, nanoscale surface engineering, and astrochemical ice dynamics.
