Steven Salaita is a Professor and Chair in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. His work bridges academic rigor with socio-political critique, focusing on Native American and Indigenous Studies, American Literature, Race and Ethnic Studies, and Arab American Culture and Literature.
Salaita’s recent articles reflect urgent global political dynamics, notably the genocidal violence in Gaza and its implications for Arab-American identity. His writing interrogates electoral politics, Zionism, and the crisis of liberal democracy. Notably, he argues that genocide in Palestine must be central to any ethical political calculus.
His upcoming memoir, An Honest Living, will detail his experiences leaving and returning to academia. Salaita’s lectures at institutions like UMass-Amherst and Villanova University emphasize disaffection as a critical practice, challenging students and scholars to reimagine resistance beyond institutional constraints.
