Steven Quiring is a Professor in the Department of Geography at The Ohio State University, specializing in climatology and hydroclimatology. He is also affiliated with the Translational Data Analytics Institute and the Storm Impact Sustainability Institute. His research focuses on land-atmosphere interactions, drought monitoring, and modeling the impacts of weather events on power infrastructure. He holds a Ph.D. in Climatology from the University of Delaware and has extensive experience in federal and state-funded research projects. Key projects include improving seasonal climate predictability, storm impact modeling, and soil moisture analytics. Quiring teaches courses like GEOG 5900 and 8901, and has advised numerous graduate students. His work has been featured in journals like Journal of Hydrometeorology and Climate Dynamics, with over 100 publications and $15M+ in research funding. Awards include an NSF CAREER Award (2010).
Education: Ph.D. (Climatology, University of Delaware, 2005), M.A. (Geography, University of Manitoba, 2001), B.A. (Geography, University of Winnipeg, 1999).
Research emphasizes data-driven approaches to solve societal challenges, including hurricane and winter storm impacts on power systems. Collaborative projects involve universities, government agencies (e.g., NOAA, DOE), and industry partners. Key grants include NSF-funded studies on surface-atmosphere interactions and soil moisture feedbacks.
Scientific Awards: NSF CAREER Award (2010), Fellow at The Risk Institute (Ohio State University).
