Professor Steven Pratt is a leading academic at the School of Chemical Engineering, The University of Queensland, and serves as Centre Director of the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Bioplastics and Biocomposites. With over 150 publications, he is internationally recognized for his work on polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bioplastics and their wood-fibre composites, addressing the global plastic crisis through sustainable alternatives. His research integrates environmental engineering, bioprocess systems, and industrial-education partnerships.
Pratt has developed the TOGA® Sensor, a groundbreaking tool for bioprocess monitoring, and has taught Environmental Systems Engineering, Wastewater Treatment, and Environmental Biotechnology to both students and professionals. Recent work focuses on biodegradable polymer applications in agriculture, marine degradation dynamics, and nanoparticle engineering.
His 15 most recent articles (2024-2025) reveal trends in PHA synthesis from waste streams, nanoparticle redispersion strategies, and polymer additives for controlled degradation. These span marine biodegradation mechanisms, block copolymer synthesis, and industrial-scale polymer processing.
Scientific Awards:
- Outstanding Supervision Award
- Enhanced Research Supervision Culture Contribution
Pratt actively collaborates with industry, leads major ARC-funded projects, and contributes to environmental policy through research on public attitudes toward plastics and sustainable practices.
