Hanik Nils is an Associate Professor at HES-SO Valais-Wallis School of Engineering, within the Chemistry and Life Sciences faculty and Life Sciences Engineering department. His research focuses on bioprocess engineering with particular emphasis on bioprocess data science, bioprocess digitalization, Industry 4.0 applications, and sustainable polymers.
Dr. Hanik's research interests span multiple areas of biotechnology and sustainable materials science. He specializes in the production and characterization of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), biodegradable polymers with applications ranging from bioplastics to biofuels. His work integrates data science approaches with traditional bioprocess engineering to optimize production methods and develop sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics. His laboratory employs advanced analytical techniques including quartz crystal microbalance for real-time monitoring of enzymatic degradation processes and chemostat cultivation systems for controlled PHA production.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on enzymatic degradation kinetics of PHAs, extraction methods from biomass, and tailored biosynthesis of PHA copolymers. These works reveal a consistent research trajectory toward understanding and optimizing biopolymer production processes for industrial applications, with particular attention to environmental sustainability and process efficiency. His work bridges fundamental biochemical understanding with practical industrial implementation.
