Steven Ongena is a Professor of Banking at the University of Zurich, with affiliations as a Senior Chair at the Swiss Finance Institute, Research Professor at KU Leuven, NTNU Business School, Deutsche Bundesbank, and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). He is a regular research visitor at the European Central Bank.
His research spans banking, sustainable finance, and applied microeconometrics. Key themes include climate policy risk, ESG performance, monetary policy effects, credit reallocation, and bank regulation. His work appears in top economics, finance, and law journals.
Recent publications focus on greenwashing, credit risk in crises, and bank responses to negative interest rates. He has supervised numerous BA, MA, and PhD theses from 2015–2023.
