Steven Miller

Steven Miller is the Founding Dean of the School of Information Systems (SIS) at Singapore Management University (SMU), a position he has held since 2002. He played a pivotal role in establishing SIS as a pioneering institution focused on business-oriented IT professionals, blending technical expertise with business acumen. Prior to SMU, he worked at IBM and Fujitsu, specializing in e-business architecture and IT consulting. Miller holds a BEng from the University of Pennsylvania and advanced degrees from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), including a PhD in Engineering and Public Policy.

His research interests center on AI applications in healthcare, education, and public governance, with notable projects like the EyRIS AI eye-screening system and collaborations with CMU’s Living Analytics Research Centre. Miller actively contributes to Singapore’s digital transformation through government advisory roles, focusing on AI ethics, cybersecurity, and smart city initiatives. Under his leadership, SIS launched SMU’s first PhD program (2006) and developed innovative academic programs such as the Master of IT in Business (Financial Services). The school is renowned for its 'learning by doing' pedagogy, emphasizing practical, project-based education.

Miller’s work highlights AI’s role in enhancing healthcare outcomes, redefining workforce dynamics, and advancing digital governance. His articles analyze real-world AI implementations across sectors like banking (DBS), healthcare, and cybersecurity, emphasizing human-AI collaboration. SIS has also fostered entrepreneurial ventures, with SMU students leading the most startups among Singaporean universities.

Key achievements include establishing the iCity Lab for smart city research and contributing to Singapore’s TraceTogether contact-tracing system during the pandemic.
