Steven Maxwell

Steven Maxwell is a Researcher in Health and Social Sector Leadership (Social & Environmental Sustainability) at the School of Health & Wellbeing, University of Glasgow. He holds a PhD in Global Public Health from University College London (2021) and has over 18 years of clinical, educational, and academic expertise in mental health nursing, public health, and prescribing practice. His research focuses on health inequities in minority and deprived populations, emphasizing sexual health, mental health, substance use, and intimate partner violence among sexual minorities.

Research Interests: Inclusive health policy, sexual and gender minority diversity, masculinity studies, HIV/STI prevention (e.g., PrEP), chemsex behaviors, and reducing health disparities through evidence-based interventions. His work integrates quantitative and qualitative methods to address systemic barriers in healthcare access for marginalized groups.

Publications & Grants:

• Recent work examines intimate partner violence among men who have sex with men (MSM) across Celtic Nations (2025).
• Recipient of grants including NHS Lothian’s £18k project on intimate partner violence (2021) and GCU’s £2.5k PrEP adherence study (2022).

Teaching & Outreach: Develops prescribing practice curricula and advocates for LGBTQ+ health equity through workshops and policy consultations. Active in conferences such as the British HIV Association Conference and European Chemsex Forum.

Labs/Teams: Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams at the University of Glasgow and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde on projects addressing chemsex-related health risks and public health policy.
