Steven M. Kurtz is a part-time Research Professor and Director of the Implant Research Center at Drexel University’s School of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Health Systems. He specializes in the clinical performance of orthopedic implants, including hip, spine, and cardiovascular devices, with a focus on real-world evaluation through retrieval analysis and national healthcare databases.
Research Interests: Computational biomechanics of bone-implant systems, contact mechanics of artificial joints, mechanical behavior of synthetic biomaterials (e.g., polyethylene, PEEK), and degradation mechanisms in implant materials. His work bridges analytical, experimental, and clinical approaches to improve implant longevity and safety.
Professional Contributions: Dr. Kurtz has edited seven books, co-founded two educational websites (UHMWPE Lexicon and Medical PEEK Lexicon), and authored over 200 journal articles and 460 conference abstracts.
