William M. Mihalko, MD PhD, serves as Professor & Chair of the Joint Program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He holds his office at UTHSC Coleman Building A307 and maintains clinical practice through Campbell Clinic. Dr. Mihalko has established himself as a leading figure in orthopaedic research and education, with particular expertise in joint replacement technologies and outcomes.
Dr. Mihalko's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Engineering & Applied Science from the University of Rochester (1987), followed by a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (1989) and dual Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Biomedical Engineering (1993) from Virginia Commonwealth University. His clinical training encompassed an Orthopaedic Surgery Internship and Residency at Medical College of Virginia Hospital and State University of New York at Buffalo, respectively, followed by a Fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at Missouri Bone and Joint Center.
Dr. Mihalko's research focuses on biologic corrosion of orthopaedic implants, synovial fluid analyses, and motion analysis related to hip and knee replacement outcomes. His laboratory conducts retrieval analysis studies in collaboration with Drexel and Clemson Universities, while his clinical research examines biomarkers of joint replacement failures. His work addresses critical challenges in making hip and knee replacements last longer by eliminating biologic responses to implants and improving surgical techniques.
Analysis of Dr. Mihalko's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on improving joint replacement outcomes through multiple approaches: addressing implant corrosion mechanisms, optimizing blood management protocols for outpatient procedures, understanding infection risks, and investigating proprioception changes after knee replacement. His work spans basic science investigations of implant materials alongside clinical studies of patient outcomes.

Dr. Mihalko has served as site PI on numerous sponsored prospective randomized clinical research trials and currently acts as co-investigator on major DOD grants. He secured an NIH R34 grant for clinical trial planning (2018-2020) as a Multiple Principal Investigator, with the subsequent U01 application under review. His laboratory maintains collaborative relationships with Drexel and Clemson Universities for retrieval analysis studies. As editor of 9 textbooks and member of editorial boards for 4 major orthopaedic journals, he significantly influences the field's knowledge dissemination.
