Professor Steven Langford is the Head of School for Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). His expertise spans organic and supramolecular chemistry, focusing on functional materials inspired by nature for applications in optoelectronics, materials science, and medicinal chemistry. He has secured over $11 million in research grants and contributed to projects valued at $100+ million.
Previously, he held leadership roles at Monash University (including Deputy Dean and Head of School of Chemistry) and Swinburne University as Dean of Research and Development. He directed the $40+ million Green Chemical Futures initiative at Monash, overseeing construction of a flagship research facility. His academic journey includes a BSc (First Class Honours) and PhD from the University of Sydney, with postdoctoral work at the University of Birmingham (UK) and UNSW.
Langford's research emphasizes materials with light-matter interaction capabilities, including sensors, photovoltaics, and catalytic systems. His work has generated over 100 peer-reviewed articles and a widely adopted textbook Chemistry: The Central Science. Awards include the Young Investigator Award (Society of Porphyrins), teaching accolades, and Fellowship in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.
- Education: BSc (Hons) & PhD (Porphyrin Chemistry) from University of Sydney
- Key Roles: ARC Postdoc Fellow, Ramsay Fellow, Director of Green Chemical Futures
- Professional Affiliations: AAS National Committee for Chemistry, Royal Australian Chemical Institute Board
His funded research projects include sustainable energy storage systems, solid-state cooling technologies, and advanced organic semiconductor development. Langford’s interdisciplinary approach bridges research innovation with pedagogical excellence, shaping curricula and mentoring over 750 HDR students.
