Professor John McMurtrie holds an Associate Professor position in Inorganic Chemistry at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), where he has been since 2004. His roles include ARC Future Fellow, researcher, and educator. He earned a BSc and PhD in Chemistry from Macquarie University (1998-1999) and UNSW (2003), respectively, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Sydney (2003-2004).
- Education:
- BSc (Chemistry), Macquarie University, 1998
- PhD (Chemistry), UNSW Sydney, 2003
- Postdoctoral, University of Sydney, 2003-2004
His research focuses on crystal engineering, supramolecular chemistry, and elastic crystals. Notable projects include designing flexible crystalline materials with mechanical and optical properties, and exploiting halogen bonding for tunable materials. He collaborates with Prof. Jack Clegg on elastic crystal mechanisms and chiral architectures.
McMurtrie’s teaching spans undergraduate to postgraduate levels, covering topics like transition metal chemistry, coordination polymers, and X-ray crystallography. He has secured Australian Competitive Grants (e.g., DP140101536, FT1400986) for projects on crystalline materials and molecular alloys.
He is a member of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and Society of Crystallographers in Australia/New Zealand. His work has produced over 30 publications in journals like Nature Chemistry and Angewandte Chemie, emphasizing elastic crystals, molecular alloys, and halogen-bonded networks.
