Steven K. Libutti is the William N. Hait Director of Rutgers Cancer Institute, Vice Chancellor for Cancer Programs at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, and Senior Vice President of Oncology Services at RWJBarnabas Health. He is also a Professor of Surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and an Affiliated Distinguished Professor in Genetics at Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Libutti received his undergraduate education at Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude. He earned his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, completed his surgical residency at Presbyterian Hospital in New York, and pursued a fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in surgical oncology and endocrine surgery.
As a surgical oncologist, Dr. Libutti specializes in the management of cancers of the liver, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands, with particular expertise in endocrine surgery and neuroendocrine tumors. His research laboratory, continuously funded by the National Cancer Institute for over 20 years, investigates the development and growth of neuroendocrine tumors and strategies for developing novel cancer therapies through understanding the tumor microenvironment and blood vessel formation in tumors.

Dr. Libutti has held significant leadership positions in the field, including serving as the immediate Past President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. Prior to joining Rutgers, he was Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care in New York City and held professorships in both the Department of Surgery and Department of Genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System.
His laboratory research represents a significant commitment to understanding neuroendocrine tumor biology and developing targeted therapies, with continuous NCI funding for two decades demonstrating the importance and impact of his work.
