Steven J. Heyman is a Professor of Law at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology. He specializes in Constitutional Law, the First Amendment, and Legal Philosophy. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Colorado, Vanderbilt, and Indiana University. Heyman holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and an A.B. from Harvard College. He is a leading scholar on freedom of expression, religious liberty, and constitutional jurisprudence.
His research explores foundational issues in the First Amendment, including hate speech, religious freedom, and the interplay between legal philosophy and constitutional interpretation. Recent work focuses on natural rights theory, John Locke’s influence on American religious liberty, and conflicts between religious freedom and civil rights. He has authored influential books like Free Speech and Human Dignity (2008) and edited Hate Speech and the Constitution (1996).
Heyman received the 2016 Award for Excellence in Teaching and serves on the Board of Advisors for the American Constitution Society. His articles address topics ranging from funeral picketing to the Second Amendment’s meaning, reflecting his broad engagement with constitutional law’s core principles.
