Dr. Steven J. Cooke is a Canada Research Professor in the Department of Biology and Institute of Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science at Carleton University (Ottawa), specializing in fish ecology and conservation physiology. He serves as founding Director of the Canadian Centre for Evidence-Based Conservation, Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo Biology Department, and Affiliate Research Scientist at the Illinois Natural History Survey.
His research spans fish conservation physiology, biotelemetry, and evidence-based conservation, with emphasis on physiological stress responses, movement ecology, and sustainable fisheries management. Current work focuses on freshwater ecosystem threats, catch-and-release fisheries science, and conservation evidence synthesis, as evidenced by his 1300+ publications including recent 2025 studies on eel migration, telemetry trends, and climate impacts on Great Lakes fishes.
Notable scientific contributions include editorial leadership as Editor-in-Chief of Conservation Physiology and board membership for FACETS and Environmental Reviews. He actively bridges science and policy through roles as Secretary of the Royal Society of Canada's College and Canadian Centre Representative for the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence.
Dr. Cooke mentors numerous graduate students and leads the Cooke Lab, which recently presented at the 2025 American Fisheries Society meeting where he delivered the Black Bass plenary address. His professional service includes chairing the Sea Lamprey Research Board and Ocean Tracking Network Canada's Science Advisor Committee, alongside ambassadorship for #Keepemwet Fishing.
