Steven Huebner is a Professor at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University, specializing in Music Research. His work focuses on French and Italian music from the 19th and early 20th centuries, incorporating music sociology, politics, opera analysis, and reception history.
- Education: Ph.D. in Musicology from Princeton University (1985)
Huebner’s research spans Wagnerism, nationalism in French opera, musical exoticism, and interdisciplinary methodologies. He has contributed extensively to journals such as Nineteenth-Century Music, Journal of the American Musicological Society, and Cambridge Opera Journal.
He has received significant SSHRC grants and served as co-editor of Cambridge Opera Journal (2007–2014). His advisory roles include guiding doctoral theses on topics like Mahler’s intellectual milieu and the sociology of 19th-century Parisian singing professions.
