Professor Steven Howard is a leading academic in developmental psychology and early childhood education at the University of Wollongong's School of Education. He holds an ARC Future Fellowship and is a member of the ARC College of Experts. His research focuses on self-regulation, executive functions, and their implications for school readiness, with a strong emphasis on assessment tools like the Early Years Toolbox, used globally in 65+ countries. He has secured over $65M in research funding from national and international bodies. His academic roles include Professor (2024–present), Associate Professor (2019–2023), and Senior Lecturer (2017–2019). Howard earned his PhD in Developmental Psychology from York University, Canada. He teaches courses in educational psychology and research methods and supervises PhD students in Education and Psychology. His work spans early childhood interventions, digital technology impacts, and global low-income community development. Awards include the Early Career Researcher Prize and multiple teaching nominations. He leads projects like the SPROUTS longitudinal study and the Australian Centre for the Digital Child. His research also addresses refugee children's school transitions and parental technology use effects.
