Dr. Steven Hoeltzel is a Professor of Philosophy at James Madison University (JMU), located within the Department of Philosophy & Religion under the College of Arts and Letters. He holds a B.A. from Michigan State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. His research focuses on Kant and post-Kantian idealism, particularly exploring questions of purposive intelligence, rational optima, and existential philosophy. His work bridges existentialism, phenomenology, and contemporary philosophy of religion/mind. Current research examines metaphilosophical presuppositions and ontological implications of transcendental models of reason.
Teaching awards include the Carl Harter Distinguished Teacher Award from the College of Arts and Letters. Courses taught span Kant, 19th-century philosophy, existentialism, phenomenology, and introductory ethics. He has authored or edited major works like The Palgrave Fichte Handbook (2019) and contributed to volumes on Fichte’s ethical and epistemic frameworks. His scholarship addresses topics such as Fichte’s moral psychology, transcendental ontology, and the interplay between German idealism and existential thought.
