Steven Hartley Collins is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University and holds a courtesy appointment in Bioengineering. He directs the Stanford Biomechatronics Laboratory, focusing on accelerating the design of prostheses and exoskeletons through device emulators and human-in-the-loop optimization. His work also explores energy-efficient autonomous systems like walking robots and metabolic-cost-reducing exoskeletons. Collins earned his B.S. from Cornell University (2002) and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2008), followed by postdoctoral research at Delft University of Technology. Before joining Stanford in 2017, he was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
His research spans biomechatronics, robotics, and biomechanics, with notable contributions to prosthetic design, exoskeleton control, and energy-efficient locomotion. He has been awarded the Young Scientist Award from the American Society of Biomechanics and the Best Medical Devices Paper at ICRA, among others. Collins teaches courses on design and robotics and is actively involved in academic leadership, including roles on the Scientific Board of Dynamic Walking and the Editorial Board of Science Robotics.
Collins' lab emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, combining mechanical engineering with biological principles to create assistive technologies that enhance human mobility. His current projects include developing adaptive exoskeletons and refining human-in-the-loop optimization techniques for personalized device prescription.
